CVI
DVC- Developmental Vision Center
- This specialized center assesses, diagnoses, and provides support to children with CVI, i.e., brain-induced visual impairment.
What is CVI?
- Vision – How and what we see can be explained by a model of a camera.
- The eyes are the lenses, the nerves are the fibers, and the brain is the main processor.
- The eyes (lens) produce images/photographs which travel through wires (nerves) to the brain (processor), where they are decoded, and we can actually see and understand them through the brain.
- When vision is affected due to damage to the brain and its connections, it is called CVI – cerebral visual impairment, which is a condition in which people have difficulty seeing despite having good eyesight.
Did you know?
- CVI is the leading (60-70%) cause of vision problems in children.
Story: Are children at risk of CVI?
- Brain injury due to various reasons such as cerebral palsy, premature birth, low birth weight, lack of glucose/oxygen/blood supply to the brain, accumulation of blood/fluid in the brain, seizures/epileptic diseases, brain infection, paralysis, etc.
Is there anything we can do?
- Functional vision can be improved with proper diagnosis and treatment.
